In remote telescope and observatory applications, system reliability becomes critical. Down time is expensive in both repair dollars and lost observing time. Economic trades to less expensive and less reliable solutions frequently become issues of false economy. Also, system metrology and error logging become very beneficial in maintaining the systems and quickly and efficiently identifying and diagnosing problems. Several examples of such lessons learned will be discussed.
