Title: Converting a Liquid Nitrogen Cooled Instrument to Remote Operation

The ESPaDOnS spectrograph at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) was designed to use a liquid nitrogen cooled camera. In order to meet the instrument requirements for the remote operating mode of CFHT, the camera was converted to closed-cycle cooling in 2010. As part of this conversion additional sensors and controls were added to the instrument to facilitate remote operation. This paper describes the changes made, and the monitoring and control system for the camera. Topics covered include temperature and vacuum monitoring, closed cycle cooling monitoring and control, PLC integration, and annual operational overheads of both systems.
